Switzerland, being worlds away from our headquarters, presented logistical and cultural challenges. Built rose to these challenges with meticulous planning, detailed design, and precision fabrication. This culminated in a retail environment that became a template for the new global retail program. Evolving and amplifying the retail expertise that we deliver to Arc’Teryx brand’s growth, is what we do. Yesterday. Today. And tomorrow. The world over.

“Im Viaduct” is a one-of-a-kind Zürich shopping center nestled in the arches of an historic stone viaduct. The juxtaposition of late 1800’s stonework and modern construction presented unique architectural and design challenges. Challenges present opportunities. In this project, the challenge was to evolve, once again, the world class retail experience that we have crafted for nearly two decades with Arc’teryx.

Concept-to-Development

Like Built, K2 Sports was born in the snowy mountains of Washington state. Outdoor winter sports are in our blood, and our yearning for adventure yields insight and innovations that are unmatched.


We have conceptualized and developed dozens of bindings, boots, skis, poles, goggles and helmets. Our deep portfolio of product design experience spans consumer electronics to specialized medical equipment. From seemingly disparate projects we continually refine our design framework and apply insights in ways that others would never imagine.

Our relationship in product development with K2 spans over a decade and has built the world class product portfolio of K2 today. We are users of what we design, and designers of what we use. Napkin sketches, clay models, and photos of our last ski trip, inspire products that we design, develop, and deliver.

Features vs. Benefits

Identifying and distilling the benefits of a new product feature (i.e. TevaSphere Technology) and translating it into a memorable experience – and the talk of the tradeshow – is no small feat. It is a win by any marketing standard. It is the essence of brand building. It is a Built specialty.

No project brief, no product in hand, and three weeks to the show – this was a deep dive. A unique understanding of design strategy and consumer interaction facilitated the rapid conceptualization, engineering, fabrication, and delivery of this interactive communication platform. Finished on time, on budget, and most importantly, on brand.

The Red Wing Shoes brand is built on small-town, working class roots. As an iconic American brand for over 100 years, upholding the pride and integrity of that heritage, through all visual communication, is paramount. Rather than shiny, crisp, and new, the Red Wing Shoes aesthetic skews toward weathered and time-tested.

Since 2010, Built has provided Red Wing Shoes with original, durable, hand crafted retail solutions. Key wood elements of the program have been hand crafted out of reclaimed wood – wood harvested from the 110-year-old warehouse and design studio that is the home of Built. No two parts or pieces are identical. It is a truly authentic process that yields perfectly imperfect, beautiful results.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

Technology and Humanity.

Merrell produces one of the largest and most diverse collection of outdoor wearables for the adventurer. From shoes and socks, to jackets, hats, and packs – they have you covered. With a footwear catalog of over 900 unique SKUs alone, there is a grand story to tell.

Designing a flagship tradeshow booth during a concurrent re-branding, involved moving targets of strategy and implementation. Delivering a tradeshow booth experience that sparked a new brand direction was a monumental task.

In addition to a booth design that focused on a walking/story telling experience, Built developed a completely novel technology and interaction. Built delivered a new way to pair the right shoe with the consumer through the use of first of its kind transparent screens, RFID chipped product, touch screen overlays and the software to drive it. It is not always a brand that speaks to a consumer – it is a two-way conversation that yields an emotional experience. We design that.

Experience Tells All

Optimized travel luggage. Coach class seating. Overflowing overhead bins. Airline food. These descriptions do not inspire the traveler – and they do not tell the full story of modern airline travel. Osprey’s re-imagined line of luggage levels the playing field and brings romance back to travel. But how?

You must try it to believe it. We did – and we do. Armed with an idea, we took our tool chest deep into the desert where old aircraft go to rest. We scored ourselves a genuine aircraft interior from a Boeing 747. With some trick reengineering and world class fabrication support, we delivered the talk of the show – straight into Osprey’s booth.

Place your luggage in the bins. Slide it under the seat. Slip into the only unassigned seats you will find on the tradeshow floor. It created a showcase, an experience with the product, and a place to kick your seat back for a moment or two. We are hands on – we want your customers to be too.
